Yamuna Bai, also known as Mai Savarkar, was born as Yashoda on December 4, 1888, in the Jawhar Principality of Thane district. Despite being born into a family of privilege, Mai remained unassuming in nature. At a young age, she married Vinayak (Tatya) Savarkar, becoming an integral part of the intensely patriotic Savarkar family.

Mai embraced her role as a wife and supporter of Tatya's revolutionary activities. She actively participated in organisations like the Atmanishtha Yuvati Samaj, which aimed to instil nationalism in women and raise awareness about the freedom movement. Mai's commitment to the cause was unwavering, even in the face of adversity.

When Tatya was sentenced to transportation for life by the British authorities, Mai stood by him with stoic acceptance. Despite the constant surveillance by the British police, Mai continued to support Tatya's efforts for social reform and national liberation.
